Priming before painting?

I have had 3 people come out to give me a quote. All 3 have stated I do not need primer (the walls are the icky eggshell/ivory/off-white builders love).One said b/c there were some grease stains and crayon marks from the previous owner, only those areas need to have Kilz on it. They all will do any wall repair needed. 1st quote is $1000 on about 1300sq ft w/ a 2 story foyer... the others I'm waiting on their proposals...

Priming can be used to seal a wall, like from grease or something, or to cover up a dark color. If you choose a dark color for paint, you should use a tinted primer so you don't have to use as many coats.

Give the walls a good cleaning with sugar soap. With the cleaning products at the supermarket.

The price sounds reasonable to me, if it includes the paint, scaffolding, drop cloths masking etc.

If they are professionals they will stand by their work.

Watch out for "cowboys" or "fly by night amateurs.

Reply:You've received some great answers. I've been a do-it-yourselfer for many years. I don't prime unless I have to. If you're painting over recently painted walls that are clean then you don't need primer. Older paint, a very dark color, or paint you're not sure if it's oil or latex-based, then a good primer would be recommended.

I use Magic Eraser, great product. Also goo-gone is wonderful. Clean after using these products before painting to remove any residue.

And do try it yourself. Cover up the floors, tape off any woodwork, move furniture out of the way. Wear grungy clothes you dont' care about, and have fun! I love to paint, it's a great catharsis. Oh, and for your two-story foyer, a paint stick and a painting pad to do edges are great. The paint pad/edger has these little wheels on it that allows you to get very close to molding/ceilings without getting paint on the molding as long as you watch and make sure no paint in on the wheels. (This is why I don't usually tape anything off, but for a newbie, tape is recommended)

Reply:Priming is not necessary when painting over existing paint unless there are grease spots as you pointed out or unless the color on the wall is dark and you are wanting to go lighter - which is not the case in your situation. However, I always prime when painting a bathroom area because of the moisture. The primer makes the paint adhere better. Another instance where primer can actually save you money is if you are painting new drywall or if the paint on the wall already is a cheap flat paint. The primer can make you have to use less of the more expensive custom color you are putting on the wall. If you really want to save money - I would consider doing it yourself. Painting is not difficult and it can be really rewarding in the end. My husband and I recently helped my daughter paint the entire inside of her newly constructed home and she saved over $8000! It only took us a little more than two weekends to do it.
Reply:You usually only need to prime if you are painting new drywall or plaster. Most grease and crayon stains can be removed or lightened with Mr. Clean magic eraser, so further coverage may not be necessary. You can continue to use magic eraser to keep your walls clean. I use mine constantly in the high traffic areas, and it works really well.

Should we reclassify what it is to be human?

I live in a large cultural desert called Grimsby in the U.K. and am finding myself resorting to checking for the opposable thumb on people who I deal with in my job to make sure they are not just shaved apes, however it seems these apes do posess opposable thumbs, but have social skills and an ability to learn that makes chimps seem positively superior.

Should we reclassify these apes as a different species (even though they can interbreed with humans) and put them to work in medical research (as subjects not researchers), in circuses as cheep entertainment, or train them to do all the simple, menial, low paid jobs that we hate?

It seems that many of them are in simple, highly paid jobs, such as elictricians, builders, plumbers, E.T.C.

Should we reclassify what it is to be human?
I know exactly what you mean... I've thought that some people are just not human because they are so stupid... but we can't reclassify them.. we need to just put them to good use doing jobs the rest of us don't want to do... like maybe they don't have brains but they have brawn, or maybe beauty. I currently work out at a Planet Fitness. When I joined I noticed there rules included no grunting and no dropping weights. Why is that? It's a gym.....the hard core body builders sometimes grunt b/c they're lifting so much weight, it's a natural thing.

It doesn't bother me either whether someone grunts or drops a weight, I understand why.

Just curious though if anyone knows why that rule is in place.

What is it about Planet Fitness's rules?
Yea, I would never join that place because of stupid rules like that. I just read in the news about a guy who had his membership revoked and was escorted out of a Planet Fitness because of his grunting.

Granted, there are extreme examples out there where people are only trying to draw attention to themselves, but when I'm truly going all out max exertion and intensity, I can't help but to make noise. Also, it's hard to help dropping 130lb dumbells after an exhausting set of incline bench press, I try to control it but that's dang hard.

I always try to be considerate of my noise levels and try to prevent dropping of weights as much as possible. I can uderstand it in regards to those folks who are just seeking attention (hey everyone, look at how much weight I'm lifting and how hard I'm working!) or those guys who slam the weights down after a set as sortof and exclamation point, but some normal occasional grunting helps.

Equipoise (Boldenone Undeclynate), or "EQ" is one of the most widely used compounds by athletes today. Even though it is a veterinary steroid, the quality of production is quite high due to its use in rather expensive animals. It is one of the safest and most effective steroids used today, by athletes, power lifters and bodybuilders. It can effect slow and continuous muscle mass and strength gains over a prolonged period, and generally cycles with this drug tend to be quite long because of this fact.

Gains on a cutting cycle including Eq tend to be high quality lean mass, while bulking cycle gains with Eq aren't as "clean" but still have a very nice quality about them. This could be due to Eq's resistance to being converted to Estrogen, as well as DHT (technically, it converts to Dihydroboldenone).

It is compared to Deca-Durobolin or better than, and from personal experience, Deca is a great mass builder. I think they'll go nicely together.

Testex, or Test. PROP/ENENTH/CYPIO combinations have a great effect on promoting protein synthesis, as well as creating a positive nitrogen balance. It is an appetite stimulant and improves the conversion of proteins. In laboratory tests, it has been demonstrated that testosterone combination increase protein and decreases fat deposition. It has proven to be an excellent product for promoting size and strength in the presence of adequate protein and calories, promotes body tissue building processes, and can reverse catabolism. Just get your dose and length of time right before commencing.

Personally, this isn't that important to me. Muscles are nice, but I look at a person's face/hair/clothes more when judging physical appearance.

i.e., You could be in crazy body builder shape but if you have an ugly face and a mullet you can forget it. On the flip side, if you are attractive and know how to dress but are a skinny dude (or a few lbs overweight), that would be fine with me.

Most of all you have to be funny, kind, confident and charming.

I am required to use my builder's mortgage company b/c they are giving me incentives but the rates are 0.5% higher than other lendes on both the 1st and 2nd mortgages.

I am wondering if I would be able to refinance both mortgages immediately after I close? What do I need to consider? What questions do I need to ask?

Sale Price: $960k

New House in California

Interest Rates for 1st/2nd mortgages: 6.75%/8.675%

Excellent FICO scores - high 700s to low 800s

Is it possible to refinance 1st %26amp; 2nd mortgages for a brand new house immediately after I close?
6.75% is average for 30 years fix loan.

8.675 is high of course, but you don't have down payment, lender wants high rates to compensate.

It is hard to find another lender to give you better rate.

I would stay away from adjustable loans or interests-only, because housing market continues to slump. Adjustable loan is "toxic", which means if rates go up while housing price stays, you will in bad spot.

As for interests-only, mortgage payment consists of two parts: interests and principal. Interests are like rent, which doesn't add to the equity to your house. It simply disappear as your pay it. If you want to use interests only loans, might as well rent, especially during market downturn, because housing price won't appreciate.

Would you consider delaying your plan? As housing market continues to slump, it might save you 10% simply by waiting for a few months. Another way to look at it, you can increase profit by 10% when you are ready to sell it.

Reply:it can be done but i would take a serious look at the builders morgage contract, you will have to pay the closing cost again an the penalty for refienancing that early alot of morgages has a 5 year penalty. you might be better off keeping the builder morgage see what the long term cost will be on both morgages but add in the cost on the new morgage closing an penalites, an see which is cheaper in the long run
Reply:Assuming you have done 100% financing on this property it might be best for you to keep the current loans. Lenders will charge higher rates for 100% or (80/20) financing options. Also you would only be allowed to use the purchase price as the value so if you did 100% financing you would have to pay the closing costs out of pocket since you would not be able to realize any appreciation on the property. Which for the combined loan amounts you have could be a good deal of money.

However it doesn't hurt to inquire about a refinance. Find out what the new rates and payments could be and compare them to your current situation. If you can recoup the out of pocket closing costs with the monthly savings within 2-3 years then it is worth it. Outside of that you need to ask yourself how long you will have either the house or the current loans because if you plan on selling of refinancing within the next 3-4 years then stay with the current situation you would be spending additional money that you wouldn't need to.

Reply:Yes you can and I highly recommend it as it will save you thousands and thousands of money over time. It's called a rate and term refinance and is done all the time. Keep in mind you will pay closing costs again but over a 30 year term will save you much much more than the closing costs. I would also guess that during the time it took to build you have gained some equity as well. With your credit scores you would have no problem refinancing. Mos tlenders out ther erequire that you live in the house for at least 6 months prior to doing a refinance transaction... Others require a full 12 months...

You can call your local Government office and file a complaint against your Husband's Employer, but please be aware that there will also be repercussions to your Husband as well.

My advise to you both is that your Husband "cut his loses" with this Employer and then look for work with another General Contractor/Builder who will put him on the books. I realize that this is easier said than done, but in the long run this will be beneficial for both your Husband and Yourself.

"Theatre" and "Theater" are different-- "er" refers to the building or space, while "re" is the company or the concept.

The builder and producer are not involved with guiding the artisic aspects of the play, and the stage manager carries out the directors will/organizes.

An actor would not be cast on the naturalness of their delivery because they are playing a character, and the other aspects listed are much more influential.

Stage business is the "choreographed" behavior. The others aren't really close in definition.

The pieces listed are fixed stage scenery, as opposed to hand props, which are moved and handled by the actors.

What is the minimum distance between 2 A/C registers location on the ceiling? I've a scoffed ceiling, and there are recess cans near the corners. Because of that my builder moved the A/C registers closer - approx. 2 to 2 1/2 feet apart.

I think they are too close, but builder says it is okay. This master bedroom size is 15x17 ft.

You will not get proper air circulation in the room like that. There is no set distance to keep them apart but the location should be based on proper air circulation not what is convenient for the builder. Housing association question regarding garden?

Hello I dont know if anyone can advise me but I am am currently living in a overcrowded 3 bedroom house and my local council have nominated me to a Housing agency for a 5 bedroom house.

The house is currently being built but when I went with hubby for a drive round one of the builders who was far from helpful said the house had NO garden.The house is a townhouse but with NO garden???? The land around the house seemed very small but I cant believe they would build a house for 8 people with NO garden. I am in Cambridge and land is expensive but I am so upset.

Are they allowed to have no garden or is this builder guy taking c***?

Why not? Condos don't have gardens. With a condo, you only own the interior of the unit. The association owns the exterior (walls, landscaping, common areas).

Assuming the figures you gave, your gain is $1 million. You get a $500,000 exclusion if you lived in it as your principal residence for 2 of the 5 years prior to the sale. In that case, you'd have a taxable gain of $500,000. This would be treated as a long-term capital gain and would generally be taxed at 15%, though there are occasional exceptions to that.

The fact that you are buying or building a new home is a totally separate issue and has no impact on the tax on the gain on the sale of your residence. The cost of the land and construction materials would figure into the basis for the new home but have nothing to do with the sale of your current home what so ever.

The two respondents who mentioned rolling over the gain into your new home are 10 years out of date. Ignore them. The old Rollover Replacement Rule was replaced with the current exclusion in 1997 if memory serves correctly. It was only a deferral on the taxation of the gain. The current rule is a full-fledged exclusion from tax that you can exercise once every 2 years.

The other comment is from someone who doesn't realize that there are a fair number of us here who DO know what we're talking about. If you follow up what I've posted here with the IRS you'll discover that it's correct information. Specifically, get a copy of IRS Pub 523 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p523.pdf and all will be revealed to you.

As long as both you and your husband lived in the house as your principal residence for a total of two of the last five years, you will both qualify for the "Section 121" exclusion. $250,000 for you and $250,000 for your husband for a total of a $500,000 exclusion. Therefore, for a total gain of $1,000,000, your total taxable gain will be $500,000.

Because Section 121 is an exclusion provision and not a postponement of gain provision, the basis for the new residence will be its cost.

While it is possible for you to handle the tax consequences of this yourself, with the amount of money involved I recommend you consult a competent tax specialist.

If you lived in your house as your primary residence for at least two of the five years immediately preceding the sale, and owned it for at least two of those same five years, you'll be able to exclude $500K of the gain if you file a joint return. You'll also be able to subtract the cost of any improvements you made, and selling costs like realtor's commissions. Whatever's left of the $1,000,000 will show as a taxable capital gain.

It doesn't matter what you do with the proceeds, so there's no deduction for any costs for the next house.

I have run my own building company in the past ( I'm a carpenter and my bro' is a brickie) so I think your name has to reflect which part of the market you're looking to operate in.

If its mainly residential extensions, conservatories, new bathrooms etc then I would suggest something like:

If its mainly new build homes from plan or sub-contracting to larger construction then use the word Construction as in your examples.

By the end of Feb I will E3 and should be an C B Builder. I want be an E4 petty officer as soon as possible, and hopefully go to officers school... but is there any cuts or corners I should know before I take the Petty officer's test.

Study, study, study. Talk to other petty officers within your rate to see if they have any advice for you. If you are an E3 in February, then I think you'll have to wait until September (possibly even the following March) to take the E4 exam, rather than take it that March.

Reply:Become a "Push-Button" E4. I was promoted automatically to E4 after my A School (Fire Controlman), with less than 1 year in the Navy. Made E5 with just over 2 years of service.

The builder is moving the truss to the side about a foot to allow plumbing to come through the floor so now that truss spacing is about 30" between them. He is using 3/4" OSB for the floor. Isn't this going to cause a problem? Please give me some good specific references to building code or product specs if you can. Thank you

Yes that is a problem. You could construct some stringers between the trusses perhaps as a fix. They could be 2 x 4's every 18" perhaps.

I would need more data for a firmer mitigation.
Reply:I would definitely rate it as a problem, and would re-jigger things so that it is not necessary to move the truss. But there is far too little data supplied here to come up with specifics (floor loading? truss span? truss size?), but if you use this data to go into the UBC, you could get the details you need.
Reply:Simply refer to the (referred to) local building codes ... doesn't matter if the structure will hold the desired weight if the building inspector doesn't pass the structure.

The spacing between the trusses is irrelevant to plumbing the structure ... unless, of course, he is using pipes larger than 30" ... once again, the building code will state the minimum and maximum distance between the trusses and between the trusses and the associated plumbing.

Basement floor was sweating in spots. Builder said I had hydrostatic pressure. It had not rained in days. I did not have my ari conditioning on all week. I turned on my air because the tempature was in the 90's. My basement is 60 x 12 in the back and 40 x 12 in the front. I feel after the air is on for a few days the sweating will go away.

It sounds to me like condensation. Get a dehumidifier and make sure your vapor barrier on the basement walls is in good shape. This in a very common situation.

Reply:When I pour a concrete slab, under a roof, I trench a spider-like design, and fill with gravel( about 8" deep). Then put a plastic vapor barrier , followed by 6x6 no. 10 wire. The trench allows water to weep out, thus eliminating the "hydro-static" pressure. The plastic helps eliminate the "sweating" from excess moisture. However, if you live in high humidity areas, extreme temp. changes like you describe will always result in some sweating.

I have a split entry home and the evening summer sun kills us. Our 1.5 ton unit is obviously too small and can only cool the house down to about 82 degrees. We have about 1450 sq ft upstairs and 300 square foot downstairs. The builder put in the smallest unit he could obviously get away with. Thanks.

Reply:3 ton unit will work fine for a 1750sqft house. Just keep in mind that your furnace needs to be able to handle a 3 ton unit. If it doesn't have enough air flow it will cause problems. If you get to big of a A/C unit it will put to much moisture in your house. Be sure and get a 13 seer unit, this will save you tons of $$$$$s in the long run. I'm not sure how the old the house is, but I sure would call the builder and discuss this with him, and if he doesn't want to correct the problem. turn him in to the BBB, and let him know your're going to do it.
Reply:Just to reinforce some of the other comments: tonnage is estimated by computer program. The program asks questions such as: square footage, how much natural shade is present, which way the windows and doors face (east and west exposure especially), insulation R-factor for walls, floors, and ceiling, etc. This information properly determines what size unit(s) are needed to properly heat and cool your home. But I can tell you what you already know, 1.5 tons is definitely not enough. A professional HVAC contractor can help you correct your problem.
Reply:You need to know more than just the square footage. There are many more factors that must be considered. What you need is called a load calculation. The process uses computer software to model the home to find the size of the equipment. For more info, check out my source.
Reply:Contact a HVAC contractor and they will size the home for you by doing heat/load calculations. Square footage alone is not enought to properly size a a/c to a home.

For a rough guess count the number of heat supplies in the entire house. Four heat supplies equal 1 ton of a/c. So if a house had 12 supplies it should handle a 3 ton a/c.
Reply:You cannot use just the square footage as a guide. There are inspections that need to be done which account for the number of windows and doors in the home. I would say you will be told a 3 ton unit as a guess based on sq. footage.
Reply:Seems like you answered your own question. 1-1/2 ton is definitely not big enough. I would suggest that you contact a local HVAC contractor in your area. Get recommendations if possible from family or neighbors. I just installed a 3-1/2 ton unit in a home about the same size. If you change the unit you will also have to change the A coil to match. Keep in mind also that bigger is not better in A/C cases. If it is too small it will run constantly and too large it will short cycle and kill the unit prematurely. I think a 3 to should do the job but no larger than 3-1/2.
Reply:We also have a west-facing house that lets in too much sun in the afternoon/evening. I'd suggest that you Google "air conditioning" and "ton unit" to get more of an idea of what you need before contacting AC companies; I really couldn't make a good guess.

Another thing I'd recommend, however, is to plant some bushes and trees on that side of the house to provide shade; it makes a bigger difference than many people realize, and reduces the strain on the AC system. Also try shades as window treatments that can be lowered when the sun gets to be too much, or some of the film that can be applied to the windows to block out the UV rays.

In this line and (%26amp;%26amp;) should be used instead of or(||).

Because if or( || ) is used, atleast one condition will be true for any input (n or N). so loop will go infinite. Hence we should use and(%26amp;%26amp;) to make the loop to terminate for either of the input n or N.

Semicolon should not be used at end of while loop.

A few years ago, my parents bought me a PC, and I got bitten by the learning bug. I started by using a "hooky" version of Frontpage to design my own website, then learnt HTML from experimenting with the 'HTML' tab on Frontpage, then realising HTML doesn't do interactive, taught myself Perl, then finding out PHP did stuff with pictures too, switched to PHP.

Then one day, I got a magazine with a version of Visual Basic on the cover (it was called learning edition then, it's express edition now) and I started to write standalone programs - then I got a version of Delphi the same way, and switched to that, then a version of C++ builder.

In an online programming tutorial, I came across a word in an unfamiliar context, differentiate, and ended up teaching myself calculus. I also figured out in a school lesson that a non-right angled triangle could be split into two right angled triangles and worked out the cosine rule myself.

Does going to University at a young age (I'm 13) sound like a good idea?
Socially, it's going to be very tough if you move into a university environment so early, but I completely understand how necessary it is to stay intellectually challenged. Does your school offer dual enrollment courses where you can earn high school and uni credit? I'm 16 and have been taking classes at the uni down the street for a few yrs now. It's awesome to take the classes there while still being in the loop at my school. I also go on summer programs every year %26amp; earn credit.

Otherwise, is there a school just for gifted kids in your town? You should definitely apply if there is one. You'll be happier socially %26amp; academically in that type of environment. My K-8 was just for kids with an IQ of 145 or higher (which would be profoundly gifted +) %26amp; some of the kids there were web proteges as well. You'd probably rock the test. It was awesome going there because the teachers knew how to keep you challenged, no one felt like a freak for being so smart because we were all that smart!, %26amp; we had all the social benefits of all the other schools. I think you'd be really happy in that type of environment. You wouldn't be bored or feel frustrated, and you'd have a whole host of people to encourage and nurture your talents.

If there isn't one, consider a top ranked boarding school. There are many that will be able to keep you challenged. I think a lot of the top schools are actually more rigorous than many universities. My school actually has a lower rate of acceptance than Harvard! The tuition at many of the schools is extremely high (mine is around $30K just for day school), but little geniuses like you tend to get scholarships. Schools are honored to have students of your ability, and will most likely offer you a substantial scholarship or even a free ride.

I would also look into taking classes outside of school so you don't fall into ennui. I take guitar and violin lessons, dance %26amp; sing. Maybe you could enroll in web programming classes??

Reply:The only problem with going to university at such a young age is that you have nothing in common, maturity or socially, with the other students. They are dealing with relationships, with becoming adults, and trying to sort out their childhood from the rest of their life. You -- basically haven't had an adolescence. Some people would say that was a good thing,(!) but generally, you have to go through some sort of adolescent phase in order to mature, in order to integrate your learning with your emotional maturity.

Being academically talented is a tremendous gift, and if you are indeed that gifted, you belong in university. However, your parents are going to have to work extra hard to make sure that you have an opportunity to grow emotionally in a healthy way. I'm sure they are proud of your gifts, but life is more than gathering academic honors.

Maybe you won't like learning stuff you already know for the next 5 years but there is more to life than knowledge and intelligence. I've known some really intelligent people in my life so far just like you who could have probably done what you're thinking of doing. They may have been intelligent but they lacked in a lot of other fundamental skills like working with others and also communicating with others. They spent so much time building up their knowlegde that they didn't know how to interact with the world around them.

So just be careful that you don't do the same.

Getting a "List Index Out Of Bounds (9)" error when I try to remove a file from a project...?

I'm using Borland CodeGear C++ Builder 2007. I've created a fairly complicated project that includes such features as database access, as well as the heavy use of classes and libraries.

I apparently have some sort of a library synching issue because, when the statements:

double xx = 0.0;

xx = Pln.Nrd.retireAge;

are executed, xx is 65 and Pln.Nrd.retireAge is 0. I don't understand how this is possible-- it's a direct assignment, after all!-- unless it's a problem with the library I'm using.

In a separate (related?) issue, I have some files included in the project: report.cpp, plan.cpp, and getp.cpp. When I try to remove them, however, a dialog box immediately pops up saying, respectively:

List index out of bounds (8),

List index out of bounds (9),

and List index out of bounds (7)

I also can't "Save All", because the list index out of bounds error pops up and prevents these files from saving.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, the problem is certainly in either Pln or Nrd. If you set xx and it becomes 65, then Pln.Nrd.retireAge MUST have been 65 before you called it. You should look for a bug in one of those classes that might cause the variable's value to reset to 0 after you retrieve it.

When I was at college I learned computer programming with the C++ programming language using C++ Builder.That was about 10 years ago.

Best programming language?
There is no best language to learn - each meets certain needs of the programmer. If u want to learn some programming language fast, learn Visual Basic. Visual C++ is much more complex, and usually the more graphic intensive programs such as games are coded in it. Visual Studio .NET contains Visual Basic, Visual C++, Java, and much more . it's the best package IMO even if it costs plenty. It's a good investment.

A language is just a tool and based on your requirements on why you need to program you select a language that is best suited for that job.

Say if you want to do parsing you can use perl, c++, java

If you want to do web programming then you might want to use java. For kernel programming c and or c++ based on the operating system.

People tend to use and abuse a programming language by using them for tasks they were not designed for.

E.g. it would be crazy to think of writing an OS in perl.

If you want to understand programming you might want to learn some functional programming languages like lisp or sml ... functional languages are beautiful and they teach you to think bottom up (or the true top down based on what you think is up and down) before you type.

When I was at college I learned to program using c++ with Borland C++ builder.I now know the language quite well.It was a few years ago when I learned it and things have moved on a bit since then. I would like to start programming again but which programming language would be best to learn now and what compiler should I use?It would be a shame to learn something totally different after I know C++ so is there a way where I can still use my C++ knowledge?

Move to visual studio 2005 and the .NET platform. You can leverage your knowledge of c++ to pick up c# (becoming very widely used) or c++/cli, or just plain c++.

Reply:Why move on? Borland made good compilers. C++ is well used, Linux is written in C. Bprland C++ builder is a C++ compiler with a simple to user windows interface. Latter versions are available and will do well. Or you could look a Delphi which is the same front end as C++ builder but uses Pascal as the language.
Reply:There are many Free Software projects out there using C++ . For example, Inkscape, Scribus, 7-zip, and thousands more. If you're using one, and there's something bugging you, why not join in and create a patch?

If you'd like to try something else for the experience of it, the closest thing in syntax is Java. Or, you could move further away, and try a language using a different programming concept, such as Haskell.

I use c++ builder myself I have found it to be hands down the most verstile tool out there. I used to use VB it is quick but not as powerful as C/C++. I took a opengl class it use VC++ but even then I did my homework on my C++ Builder than just overted the code to VC++ in class before turning in my assignment. There are Arugment for and againt all the tool out there. There are even some striaght Assembly programmers out there. I am just courious to know What to do you and why

I use Quincy for C++ - it's free, easy, color codes things. Plus, I had to use it in college, and I guess when you get familiar with a certain way of doing things, you kind of like to continue doing it that way.

New A/C Smell?

I just bought a NEW house (built in 2006) and the air that comes out when the A/C kicks on has a new smell. Any ideas how I can get rid of it? The builders said it would go away when the unit gets broken in but it has been a month with 95-100 degree temps %26amp; I am tired of it.

New A/C Smell?
Any A/C does not give out any type of smell. It just circulates the same air from the room. The smell you are getting is from the new house paint, varnishes, wood etc.

To get rid of the smell, open a vent or keep any window slightly open so that fresh air comes in the room and the same amount of the smelling air passes out.

You can keep all your windows completely open when you are not using your ac.
Reply:If the furnace has not been turned on then run it for about 20 minutes to burn off the newness. If its a gas unit it will smoke and smell a bit. If the odor is still there after then its the new home smell.
Reply:Try placing an open type air freshener in the intake air vent. It should circulate through the house.

The newness just has to wear off with use. You may have the same when the heat comes on, for a while.
Reply:I have installed many new a/c units and furnaces, I have never smelled anything. A new gas furnace will smell like burning oil because of the oil on the heat exchanger. A/C I don't know unless it is just buliding material that has the smell. Try changing your air filter to a pleated type if you haven't already done so. They cost more but are very efficient.

Building that close to sea level shows questionable reasoning at best. I understand the need for the city to make a statment saying "We are not beaten", but I'm not too certain that enough effort was put into thought about the best way in which that statement should be made, or in the planning of the project itself.

The broker knew there was no air conditioning, but listed it as having such.

Also, the home builder said I need to contact the HVAC sub contractor since the home was new and it was only the A.C. not working. The sub is now out of business and says they can do nothing.

I hired an inspector, to help with home inspection beforeaccepting the house.

A second inspector I hired (after finding out about this problem) is the one who eventually told me that he inspected the home just before I bought it, and it had the same problem.

Who can I hold legally responsible... The builders, the broker who sold it to me knowingly, the sub, or that darn incompetent inspector who I hired first?

House too big for one A/C Unit?

Here's the deal

We live in Arizona, single story home aboout 2200 SQ foot(5 bedrooms, great room, family room, kitchen and 2 baths).

One A/C unit.

We moved in last summer before it got too hot. We found that the east side of the house is 8-10 degrees warmer than the west side. We had a A/C company come out to check it, running fine. No leaks or ventilation issues. We were told the builder should have put two units in for this size house.

1)Is this ture? Do we really need two units? WOuld one bigger one work better?

2)If we added a second unit about how much could we expect to spend

3)Are there any other alternatives we could try? We've already closed off hte vent in one spare room and keep that door shut, shut the vent in the master bath and master closet. Anything else?

Fortuantely the Master BR is cool, it's the other side of the house where th other bedrooms are that is HOT!! THanks!

House too big for one A/C Unit?
at 2200 sq ft depending on the heat cool analysis of your home your unit should be either a 4 or 5 ton unit depending on what the analysis tells the hvac tech you would need to cool your home on a 100 degree or hotter day...if it is smaller say 3 ton considering the area you live in and how well your home is insulated and whether you have double pane windows..that would be to small...you could possibly get by with just upgrading your unit and ductwork to a bigger unit....you shouldn't need two units...if you do add a second unit it will cost somewhere between 1500 to 2500 dollars per ton to install....install an attic fan that works with a thermostat that will keep the attic of your home cooler..this will allow your ac unit to keep your home cooler...
Reply:!.Some homes of that size do use two a/cs Example my in laws have a 4ton for the common ares LR, DR, kitchen, 1/2 bath, study and laundry... and a 3ton for the MBR, hallway 2BR and Full bath

2. A second unit add would be expensive, you're looking at a second breaker box, Additional ducting, new wiring..etc Between 6,000-9,000 min.

3. use your ceiling fans or install one. Another return in that part of the house. plant trees on the hot side of the house, Have a Heat load calculation done to see if a single larger unit would help (there is a charge due to the time that goes into it.)

Do not close any registers! You are reducing the air flow and compounding the problem.
Reply:Where is your unit located? Look to see how your duct work is running. The vents towards the end of the duct run will be receiving less air than those towards the begining (closest to unit). You said one side of your house is more comfortable then the other and i am thinking that is because it is closer to the unit. Check and see if your round pipes have dampers in them. if they do, I suggest adjusting your dampers towards the begining of you duct run to force more air towards the end.

Reply:you cannot go by 2200 sf....they use a formula with takes into consideration the total volume of your home,ceiling heights are taken into consideration.also too geographic location.It get hot in AZ so you may need more tonage then someone in the north east.try going into your basement and or attic and adjusting the dampers .open them up (put the lever in the duct line in line with the duct where its warm in your house,and where its a little too cool close it down to 3/4).this will divert more air flow to the places where its needed.also too on the air handler there are usually high medium and low speeds.try going up one speed from what it is set at .that is if its not on high already.if this doent work you best solution is to get a bigger condensor.
Reply:Sounds like our FL house is similar to yours. We did/do all the same things! Being engineers, my hubby and I did a huge amount of research and calculations before buying a new a/c. So, I know that one unit is all that is needed for that size house. But we still have the same problems you do.

Last year, we added the newer tints on the south windows (hot side of our house) and wooden blinds (no holes) inside.

We found if we could keep the rooms from heating-up during 8am-11a, then the whole house stayed cool the rest of the day. Depending on the time of year, our hot-side switches from the south to the north....

There is also the chance that your attic is just too hot and radiating into the house. Or your clothes dryer could be sucking the cold air out of the house.

You don't need another a/c, just some investigating on the source of the problem.
Reply:Two units is the way to go - mostly because they will be run by two different thermostats in two different areas of the house. If you get a bigger unit, you will find that some areas of the house are going to get cooler than where your thermostat is located, and some will be hotter.

If you get the solar screens on the windows, it should help dramatically. Closing the vents near the thermostat will slow the cold air getting to the thermostat and keep the A/C running longer, which should help cool off those rooms.

Your A/C is probably working just fine, but you only have one thermostat, and when the temperature in the area that the thermostat reads in 'fine' (i.e. what it is set at), it will shut off regardless of what the temperature is in the rest of the house. (I shut down the vents to the nice and cool rooms which forces pressure to the warmer rooms, and reverse it for the heater in the winter).

How much spacing can you have between trusses if using 3/4" OSB? The builder is moving the truss for plumbing.

The builder is moving the truss because of plumbing through the floor and it is about 30" between the trusses now. All the other ones are 19.2" O.C. Is that something that you are even allowed to do?

I wouldn't go over 24inches. The only time I ever go over that is for stairwell openings. But then everything is doubled up. I am wondering why the plumber wasn't able to work around the truss or even trough it, if it's a manufactured truss or I-Beam. If he feels there is no other way than going 30". I would tell him you would need to consult the architect and/or a structual engineer.

New house [6 months old] and have a bedroom [used as an office] with bay windows. Sun hits these windows most of day until about 4 pm. Tried adding another vent, dark full screens and added two roof ventes on room...A/C set at 75 but this room always [night and day] around 79/80...... Builder also checked for insulation in walls and there is some.....Only way to keep this room cool is to set A/C at 72 but unit runs all day.......

well your on the right rabbit. your bay windows are the likely culprit.

get a hold of a commercial glass out fit and get a uv reflective film installed on the glass. you have seen this stuff on big buildings with a lot of glass, it has kind of a blue green iridescent color. its kindly costly, but it helps. i had to have some windows coated in a big office building coated once, there was no way we could keep up with the heat load generated by the glass in the building. after the coating the rooms cooled much better.

have a hvac guy check to make sure the extra branch lines going into the room are coming off the main trunk.

you can increase the airflow into the room by adding a return air grill on the top of the door(unless the room has its own return)

you can try shutting down the vents in the rest of the house a little at a time to better balance the system.

if this still isn't helping, have the take offs replaced with scooped takeoffs.....take offs are where the branch line joins the main trunk.....if the take off is too close to a bend or transition, it will be starved for air, so a scooped takeoff is needed.

as a last, and i mean very last resort, you can add a booster fan to the branches that feed that room. they are usually noisy, and i havent seen very many that have been installed right.

Reply:Return air is very important for proper cooling it is allot more efficient removing the hot air and replacing it with cool air rather than just dumping cold air in a hot room.Check to see if there is a return air vent in the room if so you can check it for air flow with smoke from a cigarette or freshly extinguished candle. If there is little or no air being removed then the return air duct work may not have been designed or installed properly and should be checked, if there isn't any return air then one should be added. If the room is on the second floor then return air is extremely important . but just remember with all homes old and new , hot air rises and you get a couple degrees difference per floor. to minimize the cold air from flowing to the lower levels and hot air rising you should

1-circulate fan all the time by putting fan switch in the on position at thermostat

2-Keep doors closed to each floor of the home including the basement if possible

3- keep door to the problem area closed as much as possible.
Reply:You can have a vent fan added to the vent only into this room. This will put more air into the hot room. You can have a switch directly tied into the a/c and also have an on/off switch installed into the wall.

I'm surprised your contractor didn't suggest this.

An easier method is to put up curtains.

When trying to save new content in Yahoo Site Builder 2.5 I received an 'Out of Memory' error message. However, the message said that if you are an advanced user you could create a custom batch file that contains the following command:

Issues with builder?

We bought a new house last year. Last month I had to give the builder (DR Horton) a report on things in the house that we want fixed. We hired an inspector to check on the house and help us fill this report. He found few things like voids under the driveway, A/C units issues ...

A month after I submitted the report to the DR Horton customer service someone called to look over it at our house and see what he thinks should be fixed or not,

They will fix some of the items on the list but not everything (like if the inspector didn't know anything about building).

What can we do so they fix all the items from the report ?

Issues with builder?
Call the contractors license board in your state. But before you do that tell DR you are going to do this and they will fix it I assure you. You have a very good case the contractors board when and if it gets that far usually require an independent contractor to comment on the substandard issue and you already have this from the inspector. It might be helpful for more ammo to get the other issues evaluated by a licensed contractor in that area for example the concrete. Just call them up and tell them you would like to have them give you an estimate for your problem. They should be honest enough to tell you when they see the problem if it does in deed need fixed. If so you have more to present in your case. But honestly mentioning the Contractors board usually does it.

My builder didn't build to plans?

the plans showed the a/c duct work going up a column in the media room. ( not visable ) We plubmed for a wet bar on the back wall. The builder ran the duct work differently causing the duct work to come in to the room. They sloped the ceiling in to the room right over where the wet bar was to go, so now we have this 45 degree slope in the back of the room. They say the roof line won't allow it to go up the column. We had to force a meeting to get the mto stop, but they kept going, and said there was nothing that they could do.

Do we have any rights?

I work on houses, I don't build them but am involved in a different part of the construction process. It sounds like your builder took some what we call, shortcuts to make his work easier. One word, "SUE". talk to a lawer and see what your options are. Why should you pay for someone else mistakes. Good luck
Reply:Any deviations from the plans should have been authorized by you or at the very least have been brought to your attention. Check your contract for any wording to this effect. Talk to the builder regarding working out a solution or get a lawyer involved if they do not cooperate. If the contractor is licensed, call a local license board for options and info.

The builder computed their fees (labor %26amp; materials) based from the prepared plan. Since this is their basis, they should follow what are stipulated on the plan. If they have foreseen that the work cannot be executed as per plan, they should have called your attention first before executing the work. Even if there will never be any additional cost involve for both labor and materials due to the said changes, they should have still called for your attention and explained what they intend to do and its possible outcome. How can I tell what size A/C unit my house needs?

I am buying a new home and the builder installed an A/C unit that is smaller in size than others in the neighborhood.

The house is 3650 sf, and the A/C unit is 13.0 SEER and according to the manufacturer's website (Ducane) the unit has a 1.5 to 4 ton nominal capacity. I spoke to a guy that used to design HVAC systems and he said that for a house that big, I'll need 5 tons of cooling and there should really be 2 separate 2.5 to 3 ton each units.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What I want to know is, do we discriminate against people on a sub-concious level? Do people really chose a builder just because he/she is cheaper, or is it how they come across to you, first impressions, race? or is it just as it should be, choosing the most experienced and capable person/team for the job? let me know as it may help me gain new contracts I otherwise might miss out on. Reply:i would look into certification of each builder, and then i would try to contact several people who have used each builder and see what they say about the company. i would choose the builders with the best customer satisfaction and the certification to do the work i need done. i don't base my decisions on the cultural background of the people i plan to do business with.

C&C cage needing better support for rabbit and guineas?

Okay, I have a double layer Guiena pig cage, that is shared with my rabbit. I used C%26amp;C cage ideas, and used targets storage cubes. It is 5 across, and 2 on the side. it's relativly large, and eventually I will go bigger. Until that time can come, I need some advice on better support for this cage. The corner clip and ties are used for support. They work fine, however over time things are starting to become bowed or loose. I have wooden supports going through the top of the first layer, to support the rabbits hopping around. There is a ramp as well than comes up and down, so that the rabbit and guinea's can have their own 'domains'. They get seperated during night,feeding, and when i'm not here. Some days too, both animals are moody LOL. I just need some advice from C%26amp;C builders, on good ways for support ing the cage better.

I do have suggestion on C%26amp;C cages. However, I will not give advice to someone who is willingly putting thier pig in danger by keeping him with a rabbit. One kick (not necessarily from aggression) can kill your guinea pig.

But u can't see the last 2 statements (showed in block)....here what actully happened is ...

The destructore for obj2 will be called after the "MAIN() FUNCTION" is terminated" (i.e. after the closing braces).

B'coz, obj2 is declaired in main() function, so its life is in the main() function's scope.

The destructor for obj1 will be called just b4 the "PROGARMM" is terminated (i.e. bust b4 the programm is removed from the memory).

B'coz, obj1 is a globle object of TEST class and its life is thruout the programm.

I dont know about the Borland Compiler, but in Turbo compiler you can se the output screen again after termination of the program using "ALT + F5" and doing this will show the real output...

Forgive me as I have cut parts out regardless, I found you had multple problems with the code, such as how you were actually giving the function protyptes in the class actual code (only pass them parameters if needed, you do all the code you want the function to do in the defintion. A class can ONLY have one deconstrutor. Also if you are compling this in one file...as your code showed...then why did you not use namespace std? That was probably half of your errors right there you would have had to use std::cout %26lt;%26lt; "stuff on screen";

So, you might have an issue with text output. That doesn't explain why you get some lines printed out and not others, though. So, yeah, you might also have a flaky compiler, since the code works as expected with g++.

I have to make C++ program witch plays a sound each time someone press any letter on keyboard. Does anybody knows how to do that?

Sounds should be different for example : if you press "A" you hear sound "A" if you press "B" you hear sound "B".

is it better to make it console program or with C++ builder? Can you give me some advices how i should do that and what to start with?

System::Console::Beep(frequency, time);

Frequency is the tone in Hz of the sound,

Time is the duration in miliseconds of the beep.

This uses the beep on your Motherboard rather than playing through your speakers. This way you can beep for a second or so on each keystroke and change the frequency for each key.

If you need help on how to make the sound actually play when you hit a key you'll need to be a bit more specific on what you're doing (is it a WIndows Form or console app, are you entering text into a textbox etc.).

For kicks I put this in a timer once and counted up the frequency, had a little frequency sweep that way.

Nevertheless, and I'm sure this will surprise you, I am not writing this to scold you. I can't give you specific details because you haven't told me what your hardware is -- not least, what your operating system is. At least that and your compiler are essential for a specific answer, because there are hardware-dependent libraries out there for "real coders".

For Windows input (the keyboard) conio.h gives you direct access. Unix/Linux/Mac OS X have ncurses, and there is a clone for Windows called PDCurses. I'm going to assume you're using Windows, therefore directX and link you to a couple of tutorials and a forum thread about programming DirectX sound in sources. Please note. For the most part you will have to download libraries to do it. I'm not on Windows, and I don't write for DirectX at all, so I can't tell you how trustworthy these programs are, but if you want to learn how to do sound I guess you'll have to find out for yourself.

Hi all. I am having an issue using Borland C++ Builder where I have 2 classes:

TTarget

TTgtMgr

Both classes include references to the other in the defintions (header) and the implementation (cpp)

I tried using forward declarations. This allows me to make vars

TTarget *tgt

TTgtMgr *mgr

in each others classes, however the problem is, in the implementation, I try to access the methods of the other class and I recieve the following compiler error:

Cannot access methods of %26lt;class%26gt; because %26lt;class%26gt; is not yet defined.

So for example in TTarget.cpp I do:

*TTgtMgr *mgr

mgr-%26gt;someMgrFunc();

And the error occurs.

I feel like some form of late binding might help but I really dont understand it well enough to implement such a fix.

Any thoughts on how I can remedy this problem?

In TTarget.h before actual class definitions starts

How do I go about learning C++?

Hi,

I started with BBC Basic and 6502 Assembler years ago, then when Windows came around I got Visual Basic. I liked the ease but I ditched it because of the need to put everything in an 'install package' - even simple 12 liners.

I am now competent with Delphi, PHP, Perl, HTML %26amp; Javascript.

Delphi is a bit restrictive, so I want to learn C++.I have tried a couple of C++ compilers (old versions of Visual C++ and C++) Builder, but I just can't get the code to interact with the form, and the books I have read don't seem to explain it to me. It seems II have a mental block on the subject.

Can someone please point me in the right direction.

It's all about getting the right book and the right compiler.

Compiler. You absolutely must get a modern compiler. C++ has changed in 99, but nearly a decade later people are using something outdated. There's two popular compilers that are in mainstream usage. The first is Microsoft Visual C++. You can get a free version (search on VC++ Express). The other is gcc. gcc is a multi-system compiler. It's used on Linux, but on Macs and Windows as well. The Windows version goes by the name MingW.

Now you also need to get a half decent book. There's a lot of outdated or just plain bad books on C++. I recommend either Accelerated C++ by Koenig or C++ Primer (4th Edition) by Lippman. Lippman and Koenig are actual experts on C++, and their books are technically accurate and intended for serious learners.

A couple of points. With C++, it is critical you not try to do GUI programming initially. That might have been OK with VBasic and Delphi, but it is not the case with C++. You must learn the language first, as GUI is not a part of C++ itself. It's just an application of C++ programming.

The second point is that if you want to Windows GUI programming, C++ may not be even be the best choice. Microsoft is moving towards its .NET platform, including for GUI programming. You might not like it, but that is the reality. If you want to focus on Windows GUIs, go with C#.
